Why Ya'll So Big On Celebrating Valentine's Day, Reevaluating: Love, Commerce and Cultural Pressures
Is Valentine's Day just a celebration of love, or has it become a commercialized spectacle? We unpack the intricate layers of this holiday by exploring its roots from the fifth-century honoring St. Valentine to its transformation into a day filled with gifts, social media pressures, and expectations. As we navigate through the complexities, we challenge the traditional narratives, questioning the societal pressures placed on women and the financial burdens on parents. Our conversation exposes the often-unseen emotional toll on individuals who compare themselves to the seemingly perfect relationships flaunted online, urging everyone to seek genuine contentment beyond the curated social media images.
The conversation takes an enlightening journey into cultural identities, unearthing the historical evolution of Valentine's Day and comparing it to other holidays like Detroit's Sweetest Day. We also broaden the scope to examine the broader pressures of holiday gift-giving, considering its impact on families and the authenticity of our celebrations. By questioning the relevance of these traditions, we invite listeners to reconsider the true meaning behind the holidays we celebrate. Engage with us as we challenge conventional perspectives and encourage a collective reevaluation of the traditions we hold dear.

Why do we even celebrate Valentine's Day? Do you know why we celebrate Valentine's Day Like? Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day? Is it very important to you to buy your spouse, your boyfriend, your kids or just people that you love, something today or, excuse me, on that day? Well, if it is, why Do you even know where this holiday comes from? Is it a pagan holiday or is it just something that was just made up for America to benefit financially from? Or does it come from another country, or is it a real holiday? So what is Valentine's Day all about?
Kali: 1:25
Let's get into it, let's get deep y'all, anyways. So usually on Valentine's Day, us as females not so much males, but females we have very high and false expectations. We expect our spouse to go out and, most of the time, buy that engagement ring OK, but no, we expect something big flowers, something. And now, with social media, we definitely expect something that we can show off. I got my red on today. I'm showing off my red for y'all today. They can't have you Valentine's Day, whatever.
Kali: 2:00
Anyways, it's not one of my favorite holidays. When I was a kid, I loved it. When I dated someone romantic, I liked it, but now not so much, not so much. And let me talk to you about why. Okay, let's get into it, let's get deep y'all. So I don't like Valentine's Day for many reasons. I'm going to tell you why I don't like it anymore. Okay, but I don't like how we influence. This is one of the reasons why I don't like it.
Kali: 2:27
I don't like how we influence our children to celebrate and embrace liking the opposite sex at such a very young age with this Valentine's Day holiday. We do this with them. Who do you like, and they go to the store and they buy some stuff for the opposite sex. Sometimes they buy stuff for their female friends, their best friends, their bestie at BFF, but at that age they're already encouraged. And sometimes they do buy something for some little boy that they think is cute and that they like, and I just think that's weird, because that day it's okay for us to do that and for them like someone at that age. But let them come home next week, march, april, may or June, and be talking about they like Jimmy, you'll be like you better get, go, give me that belt. What do you want? It's, it's. But that day we, we you know, normalize it and make it so cute. We're confusing the damn kids, of course we confuse ourselves. But let's go even further, guys. So I was.
Kali: 3:32
I was at the Dollar Tree earlier and I seen this mom. She spent like 50 on these little balloons and candies and this and that. And that's another thing. How much money did the parents feel like they have to spend on this day when the teachers send home this list of 30 and say, oh, your kid can't just buy their friend something, they have to buy all 30 of these kids something because we don't want the kids to feel left out and that stuff is not cheap. Because the retailers know this, they boost that price up. But what they don't know or I guess what they forget to know or think about is that half of these parents buying that stuff we're single parents and that shit is high. Bring it down a notch, thank you.
Kali: 4:17
I happen to homeschool my kids right now, so I get to miss that stuff, but I do buy them stuff on Valentine's day to tell them I love them, and maybe I shouldn't, because, as I did my own research on why we celebrate this holiday, as I do research a lot of stuff now and it gives me the information that I would have never found out and it makes me save a lot of money some of the stuff I find out, and it further makes me wonder why we're celebrating other people's holiday. We're going to get into that, but anyhow, I don't like when I was saying I was going to get into what I don't like about it. I don't like how it makes many people sad, mostly women. A single guy can care less about the day and a lot of you mature, healed, singing single women can care less as well. But there's these women that I see on Facebook that I know I'm going to feel sorry for that whole day because, yeah, they're going to be scrolling. I already feel sorry for them now because I see them scroll and you know all they do is look at other people's lives and you can tell by the things that they post and how sad they are all the time and how they're comparing what they don't have to what they have, and sometimes it's not really what they have. So you guys need to stop, you know, being sad because of what you see other people have and you do not, because you might think they have the spouse that bought them this bouquet of flowers, but they might be later on whooping their ass with them flowers they're not going to show you, nor tell you that, or tell you you know, or show you those flowers later on, fucking all over the ground. So stop being sad on this day, because most of those couples are sad Every day because of one another.
Kali: 6:19
People glorify being in a relationship a lot of times, but I know a lot of people in relationships and being in the business that I am. I dance, but I know a lot of people in relationships and being in the business that I am I dance I know a percentage of the reason why I make so much money is not from single guys. It's married men that come in there. They have older women. You know it's mostly older men that I deal with, preferably. Y'all, y'all, y'all. You guys are still gentlemen, you know. Younger men, it's more like strip club. Older men, it's more like strip club. Older men it's more like gentlemen's club. We'll talk about that on another show. But I do know that the older men, um, they, they deal with their, their wives and their spouses, um, not so much talking to them, communicating or liking them as much anymore as they used to. So that's why I do so well in my business, because they men are very physical and they like to, they like interaction.
Kali: 7:18
And when a woman goes through, I guess some of us, some of you because I have not yet and I am writing a book on how not to go through it so bad and we'll talk about that on another show but through that PMS stage I guess a lot of women just become really distant. And so that's why women do so well in strip club, because men come in to get that interaction and that affection and to see a woman smile and laugh at their corny jokes and to listen to their hard day at work and stuff that their wives don't do anymore because they're like bitch, I ain't going to do that, you pay the mortgage. If you kick me out, you'll still be paying my mortgage, so I don't have to. We're going to talk about that too one day, but it's real in the field. But anyhow, let's get back to the topic.
Kali: 8:07
The millions that are spent on Valentine's Day yearly is bananas, bananas, okay, bananas. And so I just wonder, like if we took that money and spent it somewhere else every year or saved it every year, how would life be, you know? But anyhow, why do we really celebrate this day Again? Do you know why? I kind of knew it had something to do with some guy, but I needed to know why this guy St Valentine, why we celebrate him. So I'm going to tell you so that maybe on Friday, if you don't have a Valentine, you are not so sad about this.
Kali: 8:56
Ladies mostly ladies, because gents don't give a damn. Most of the time. Men don't even get on valentine's day, even if they have a spouse for years. They feel like it's only a day for them, like a day for guys to buy them something. Here in detroit we have like a male valentine's day, it's like it's called sweetest day, and I don't know. There's a few other states that celebrate it. It's not in february, it's in october, but that day is based around men getting a gift. But I don't know, you know, I don't know, I really don't know, but anyways, let's get into it.
Kali: 9:28
Why do we celebrate valentine's day? What? Where the hell this place, this, this holiday come from? Is it a pagan holiday? Is it just made up, you know? Is it something attached to something? Yes, it is.
Kali: 9:38
It dates back to the fifth century. It honors St Valentine, a priest a priest in Rome, not America who was known for marrying people during a time that it was illegal to be married. I don't know why Now that part you'll probably have to research on your own. It was illegal for soldiers to be married now I don't know why. So he secretly did this for many couples. He secretly married couples that were not supposed to be getting married. Okay, soldiers, and um, this is how this day became. So he did it for many couples, and St Valentine's was known for promoting love and romance.
Kali: 10:29
So Rome holds a feast day on February 14th, honoring St Valentine, the day he was martyred. Okay, to be martyred means not murdered. Martyred means to be killed for one's face or beliefs. So they killed him for this. They killed him for breaking the law. They told him do not be marrying people. He married people anyway. So they killed him for it, and he it was on, I guess, february 14th. So now they honor him every, very every february 14th.
Kali: 10:59
And so you're sad or you're mad at your man, your nigga, your boo-boo, your fiance, your boo daddy, your tink-pink, whatever you call him. You're ruining something. Y'all be breaking up with motherfuckers for this. Some of y'all break up with your man for this. I'm sorry, excuse my French. Today, some of you guys base relationships on shallow stuff like this and you don't even know why this holiday exists.
Kali: 11:30
Okay, so is this a pagan holiday? Should we not have this holiday in America? Because it's based out of Rome? You know what I mean. Why are we celebrating here in America? How did this holiday get to America From Rome and Emirates? Well, it started being celebrated in America in the 18th century. It dates back to the 5th century and we just started celebrating it in the 18th century through letters, celebrating it in the 18th century, through letters and card exchanges. So, yes, we're celebrating a holiday that was brought here through European immigrants. So that's how this holiday got to America, because the people that migrated here so many people migrated here. Not us, that's for another show. We'll talk about that too. But this is why you celebrate Valentine's Day, ladies and gentlemen.
Kali: 12:36
So, before you go out this Friday and spend all this money on a day that's honoring a priest, and the only reason they're honoring him is because he married a bunch of people, isn't that what priests are supposed to do? Okay, well, he did it against the law and he was martyred for it, which means killed for something you believe in. Okay, so many people were killed for something you believe in. Okay, so many people were killed for something they believed in. We don't have a holiday for them and we don't go buy a bunch of things. I mean, I don't know, but if we, you cause I'm not African American, I'm indigenous, I'm not we're going. I'm not African-American, I'm indigenous. We're going to talk about that another day. But if Black people, I'm not going to call myself Native either. But if people of color, we got to figure out what you guys are comfortable with, because all of us are not Native American, indian, indigenous, all of us are not from Africa, so I don't know what to refer to, but people that look like me or that are not from Rome or European. How about we'll just say that?
Kali: 14:08
What do we celebrate? What do we celebrate? What do we celebrate? What are our holidays? Indigenous people and native american people and african american people there are some people that are african-american, some, I believe, some slaves that maybe were, or some people that migrated here on their own from africa. What do we celebrate if we don't embrace European and other countries' holidays? What do we celebrate if we don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo? What do we celebrate if we don't celebrate Christmas? What do we celebrate if we don't celebrate Fourth of July? What are our holidays? Do we have any as indigenous people? Do we have any holidays as Indian people? Do we have any as indigenous people? Do we have any holidays as Indian people? Do we have holidays as Black people? Do we have holidays? African American, whatever you are, I know Mexican people know what their holidays are. But what are our holidays, the real Indians? What are our holidays? Can we make some up or do we have some. So stay tuned for that. I'm going to look into that. We're going to do some research on that. We're going to have, hopefully, some guests.
Kali: 15:17
I've been begging people to come on. You know some people that are native, indigenous or whatever they like to call themselves people. I've been begging them to come on because the people that I see them getting deep online and giving the real good information, that it can explain it and go deep without having to read, because I mean, I know my stuff but I want to give you guys the facts and I don't want to miss anything numbers, dates, times, nothing you know, and so I would have to read. But there's some people that know this shit right off the top of their head and can I mean and make it like storytelling and I want them on here. I've been doing enough reading and research, but I ain't, you know, I don't want to lose you guys with this. I want this information to be so good that it keeps you guys focused and, you know, tuned in and I might not keep you there, and so I'm trying to get some people and if you are someone that knows more information about you know, our people that were originally here celebrating. Please feel free to inbox me on Facebook or comment below and let me know if you'd like to be a guest on this show and talk more about these things.
Kali: 16:29
You know us being here and what our holidays are as um native people of america, because it ain't these holidays that we're celebrating and breaking our backs and bones or to buy all this stuff for every year and feeling bad when we can't breaking up with people and ending relationships and basing relationships off of this stuff and we even have our children's this way.
Kali: 16:53
Our children base their relationships with us of what we buy them for Christmas and what we buy them for the birthday and it leaves so much pressure to the people that are trying so hard that don't have more than what they have to get more to do these things. You know, like the kids that feel bad because they can't get the Christmas gifts that other kids get, and you know that don't get fireworks or Easter baskets because of these holidays that we made up. So what are our holidays? Let's get into it again. If you'd like to come on the show and discuss these topics and issues and get deep with us, then come on on the show, you guys, and let's get deep Again. I want to thank you guys for watching. Don't forget to like, share and follow and stay tuned for our next show. Thanks for watching. You're watching the Deep for the Week show. See you next time.
